What Is a Special Enrollment Period — and Do You Qualify in Virginia?
Virginia's health insurance Open Enrollment runs from November 1 through January 15. But what happens if you need coverage in February, or July, or any other time of year?
That's where a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) comes in. Certain life events allow you to enroll in or change a Marketplace health insurance plan outside of Open Enrollment — and you may have a window right now.
What Triggers a Special Enrollment Period in Virginia?
The following qualifying life events open a Special Enrollment Period on Virginia's Insurance Marketplace:
- Lost health coverage — including losing job-based insurance, aging off a parent's plan at 26, or losing Medicaid eligibility
- Got married or entered a domestic partnership
- Had a baby, adopted a child, or had a child placed with you for foster care
- Moved to Virginia or moved to a new area of Virginia with different health plan options
- Gained citizenship or lawful presence in the United States
- Released from incarceration
- Experienced certain income changes that affect your subsidy eligibility
How Long Is a Special Enrollment Period?
In most cases, a Special Enrollment Period lasts 60 days from the date of the qualifying event. Some events — such as having a baby or adopting a child — may give you 60 days before and after the event.
The most important thing is to act quickly. Waiting until the last week of your window means less time to compare plans carefully.
What Documentation Do You Need?
Virginia's Marketplace may require documentation to verify your qualifying event. Common documents include:
- A letter from your employer confirming loss of coverage (with the date)
- A marriage certificate
- A birth or adoption certificate
- Proof of Virginia residency (utility bill, lease agreement)
A broker helps you gather the right documentation and submit it correctly the first time, avoiding delays in your coverage.
Do I Still Qualify for Subsidies During a Special Enrollment Period?
Yes. Your subsidy eligibility is the same during a Special Enrollment Period as during Open Enrollment. If your household income qualifies, you'll still receive the Premium Tax Credit to reduce your monthly premium.
